Ideogram Background Replace Review: New Backgrounds From a Prompt

Background Replace, built on Ideogram V3, cuts out your subject and paints a fresh scene around it from a text description. Here is how it works, what it costs and how to prompt it.

Ideogram Background Replace Review: New Backgrounds From a Prompt

Background Replace is a photo editing tool on WebTerra AI powered by Ideogram V3. Upload a photo, describe the setting you want, and the model cuts out the main subject and paints a brand-new background around it. In this Ideogram Background Replace review we cover how it works, what it costs per image, how to use it online, and how to write prompts that make the subject look like it was really photographed in the new scene.

The tool targets a very practical problem. Product photos shot on a kitchen counter rarely look good on a marketplace, and booking a studio for every new item is expensive. Portraits taken at home often have a cluttered background. Background Replace turns those everyday shots into clean studio images or styled lifestyle scenes in about a minute, with no masking or manual selection.

Everything runs in the browser inside the WebTerra AI dashboard, next to the other editing, upscaling and generation tools.

What Ideogram Background Replace can do

The tool works image-to-image: one photo plus a text description of the new background go in, and the same subject in a new environment comes out. The subject is preserved; everything around it is generated from scratch.

  • Automatic subject cutout. No mask to draw and no outline to trace — the model finds the main subject on its own.
  • New background from text. Studio sweep, nature, interiors, city streets, abstract gradients — you set the scene in words.
  • Prompt expansion on by default. The expand-prompt option is enabled out of the box, so even a short request like “marble table, morning light” is filled out into a complete scene.
  • Balanced rendering. The default rendering speed is BALANCED, a middle ground between generation time and quality.
  • Presets. Replace background, Product cutout, Product listing background and Portrait background give you a head start.

The key difference from plain background removal is that you do not end up with a transparent PNG you still have to design around. You get a finished, composed image with context — a product in a room, a person in an atmospheric location, an object on a textured surface.

Prompt examples

Remember that you are describing the background only, not the subject itself. Here are prompts that work well as starting points.

1. Studio product shot

Clean seamless studio background in soft light grey, gentle shadow under the product, diffused softbox lighting from the left

A neutral hero image for a marketplace listing — nothing competes with the product.

2. Skincare on natural stone

Polished white marble surface with a few green eucalyptus leaves, soft morning sunlight through a window, light beige wall in the background

A lifestyle look for cosmetics, candles and fragrance. Natural materials make the product feel more premium.

3. Sneakers on a podium

Concrete podium on a pastel orange background, hard directional light creating a long shadow, minimalist product photography style

Ad-style framing for shoes, bags and accessories.

4. Portrait with a city backdrop

Evening city street with warm bokeh lights, shallow depth of field, soft golden hour glow

Turns a living-room snapshot into an atmospheric portrait for social media.

5. Professional headshot

Modern bright office interior, blurred background, large windows with daylight, neutral professional atmosphere

A LinkedIn or company-website photo without booking a photographer.

6. Seasonal promo

Cozy winter scene on a wooden table, soft fairy lights bokeh, pine branches and a knitted blanket, warm evening light

Same product, new story — perfect for holiday campaigns.

Tips for natural-looking results

Start with a clean source photo

The sharper the subject and the more it contrasts with its surroundings, the cleaner the cutout. Blurry edges, blown highlights and objects that blend into the background make the job harder.

Match the lighting

If light hits your subject from the left, describe a background lit from the left. Consistent lighting is the single biggest factor in whether the subject looks pasted in or genuinely part of the scene.

Respect the camera angle

A product shot from above belongs on a surface seen from above; an eye-level portrait needs an eye-level backdrop. Say so explicitly — “top-down view of a wooden table” or “eye-level street background”.

Describe what the subject stands on

Marble, oak, concrete, linen — a believable surface grounds the subject. Mentioning a shadow (“soft shadow under the product”) adds realism.

Keep listing backgrounds simple

For product cards, the background should support the product, not fight it. Blurred settings, pastel colours and minimal props usually outperform busy scenes.

Let prompt expansion help, but pin down what matters

Prompt expansion is on by default and adds detail on its own. If a specific colour or material is essential — your brand colour, say — name it explicitly so the model does not swap it for something else.

Workflow: a full product listing from one photo

The tool pays off most when it is part of a simple pipeline. This one fits most online shops:

  1. Shoot the base. Photograph the product with your phone near a window on a plain surface. Fancy lighting is not required; it just needs to be sharp and fully in frame.
  2. Hero image. Replace the background with a neutral studio sweep for the main listing photo.
  3. Lifestyle shots. From the same source photo, create two or three in-context variations — a kitchen, a bathroom shelf, a desk.
  4. Seasonal versions. Before holidays and sales, just change the background description; no new shoot needed.
  5. Finishing. If you need a larger file for a banner, run the best frame through an upscaler.

To keep a series consistent, save the prompt that worked and change only one part of it, such as the background colour or the props.

Use cases

  • Marketplace sellers. Consistent listing images, seasonal backdrops, clean hero shots.
  • Online stores. Lifestyle catalogue imagery without expensive location shoots.
  • Social media managers. Several variations of one product for posts, Stories and ads.
  • Photographers. Quick fixes for portraits with a distracting background.
  • Freelancers and job seekers. A professional headshot from a casual photo.
  • Agencies. Fast concept mock-ups to get client sign-off.

For a plain cutout, read the Remove Background review. To erase one unwanted item, see the Object Removal review. For broader instruction-based edits there is FLUX Kontext Max, and for print-ready resolution, the Topaz Upscaler. Background Replace stands out by doing two steps in one — cutout and new scene in a single request.

Limitations

  • One photo per run. The tool takes a single input image; there is no batch processing in one request.
  • Only the background changes. To alter the subject itself — colour, shape, details — use a different editor.
  • Tricky edges. Hair, transparent glass and fine details like chains may not cut out perfectly; zoom in and check.
  • Generated, not real. If you need to show an actual venue or interior, you still need a real photo.
  • Product accuracy. Double-check that colour and proportions are unchanged — listings must represent the product honestly.

FAQ

How much does one background replacement cost?

A 1024×1024 image costs 10 credits on Starter (about $0.13) and 9 credits on Pro and Ultra (about $0.11 and $0.10).

Do I need to select the subject myself?

No. The model detects and cuts out the main subject automatically; you only provide the photo and a background description.

How is this different from background removal?

Removal gives you a transparent background. Replacement paints a new scene around the subject in the same step.

Does it work for portraits?

Yes. There is a dedicated Portrait background preset for studio or city backdrops behind a person.

What does prompt expansion do?

It is enabled by default and lets the model enrich your short description with extra detail so the background feels complete.

What kind of source photo works best?

A sharp, well-lit shot where the subject is fully in frame and stands out from its surroundings. A plain wall or table behind the subject makes the cutout cleaner, and the lighting direction in the original tells you how to describe the light in the new scene.
